How to Make Nourishing Hand Lotion at Home
If you like making DIY skincare recipe, why don't you try this one? Make nourishing hand lotion at home with this recipe. A very light-weight and fast-absorbing lotion which won't feel greasy on your skin. Let's get started!
DIY SKINCARE
Making a customized hand lotion that covers your skin needs can be very rewarding especially if your skin is very sensitive to lots of ingredients found in store-found lotions. If you like indulging yourself in DIY and natural skincare then creating this recipe should be in your to-do list. I will also do hand creams. I just want to clear things out and let you know the difference between hand lotion and hand creams.
HAND LOTION VS HAND CREAM
Hand lotions are usually very light in consistency than hand creams. Hand lotions make a good summer treat for your skin while hand creams are best suited for cold weather because of their occlusive properties.
SELECTING INGREDIENTS
Apricot kernel oil: It is golden color with nutty aroma with high oleic fatty acid content. It is fast-absorbing, protecting and soothing for the skin. It is good oil for mature, dry and sensitive types.
Rosehip seed oil: This oil has a very strong aroma with richer amber color. It has high content of vitamin A and E oil. It is good for dry, mature, sensitive and normal skin. It can help to rejuvenate and reduce fine lines on the skin. Therefore this oil is such a good choice for making this hand lotion.
Vegetable glycerin: It is a very good ingredient to include in your recipe because of its moisturizing properties and increase hydration to the skin but also help in mixing of oil and water process for them to bind together to form an emulsion.
Stearic acid: These are white color fatty acid in form of powder or flakes derived from plants. So, this a safe choice for vegans and all natural skincare girlies out there! I'll be using this substance as an emulsifier in this hand lotion. You know for oil and water ingredients we need a binder and that's when stearic acid comes to play.
Emulsifying wax: Find a emulsifying wax that is natural and plant-based. It is usually pretty affordable and easily found in both online stores and convenient stores. Mostly is white with no detectable scent and melting point of between 149-155 Fahrenheit.
Distilled water: I think everybody knows water! but it should be distilled. It is very cheap and you can buy it in online store. Please, Please! Don't use tap water or boiled water. It is likely your tap water is hard and contains impurities and even bacteria that may affect the end product and reduce its shelf-life due to bacterial growth.
Vitamin E oil: This oil in its purest form has a heavy consistency. It has anti-oxidant properties that can fight off free radicals and in turn reduce oxidative stress caused by pollution and other harsh elements. It also a good preservative.
Ingredients
2 1/2 two and a half teaspoons of apricot kernel oil
2 1/2 two and a half teaspoons of rosehip seed oil
a half a teaspoon of vegetable glycerin
a half a teaspoon of stearic acid
2 heaping teaspoons of emulsifying wax
one-third (1/3) cup of distilled water
a half teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
Prepare a mixing bowl, hand-held mixer, kitchen thermometer, a wooden spoon, measuring cups and a saucepan.
Instructions
Gather your ingredients: apricot kernel oil, rosehip seed oil, vegetable glycerin, stearic acid and emulsifying wax first.
Measure the above ingredients and then into a glass measuring cup and sit this in a saucepan containing a few inches of simmering water.
Stir occasionally, make sure your ingredients are completely melted. Test the temperature by using kitchen thermometer, check if it reaches 160-180 Fahrenheit.
Meanwhile measure your distilled water in another glass measuring cup and sit this in a saucepan of simmering water and heat it to temperature of 160-180 Fahrenheit.
Now take out your first measuring cup from the simmering water, the measuring cup that you had put oily ingredients in, the 2 and 3 step.
Then, pour the oily ingredients into the glass mixing bowl and mix it with your hand-held mixer till fluffy.
You can now take out the measuring cup of distilled water from the simmering water, and pour it into the mixture in the mixing bowl, continue blending for more 5 minutes. Make sure there all these ingredients are completely combined.
Wait the mixture to cool to 98 to 100 Fahrenheit. At this stage you can add vitamin E oil to the mixture.
Pour your mixture in a well sanitized container and store it in a cool and dry place.
QUICK TIP: Find a cute, nice pump bottle that you can use for storing the hand lotion, a bottle of 4or 5 Oz. This hand lotion should be used within six months.
HOW TO USE YOUR HAND LOTION
After making your hand lotion, now what? You can use this hand lotion to moisturize your hands and keep them nourished because generally our hands endure a lot of abuse from the harsh elements. This part of the body sometimes can be ignored even by hard-core skincare enthusiast. So protect your hand all day with this DIY hand lotion.
