It can be simply be defined as oil infused with fragrant essential oils or absolutes. Many natural DIY recipes will include organic essential oils, absolutes and carrier oils while store-bought perfume oil can use variety of oils including mineral oil and fragrance oils both of which some may choose to escape altogether and go to a natural route.

Before we go continue with this recipe it'll be a good idea to educate ourselves on perfume notes. These are actually the way we categorize our scents used in perfumery based on their volatility, aromas and use. Let's put them in terms of top notes, middle notes and base notes though they're other ways to categorize them.

In this recipe we gonna simply use essential oils, some of them you might be having if you like making DIY skincare products. Let's get started!

Top notes: These are simply fragrances, scent, absolutes, extracts or essential oils that are very volatile and notable when you open the perfume oil and make between 5 to 20% of the perfume blend. Expect them to dissipate within 5 to 20 minutes. This recipe will include ylang ylang essential oil and lavender essential oil for its top note.

Middle notes: Also known as heart motes. They can make a large percent of the perfume blend from 60 to 80%. Let's add rose and jasmine absolutes for our recipe.

Base notes: These are usually very thick absolutes or essential oils that have stronger scent that can cause mid headaches. Sometimes absolutes are sold diluted to reduce its concentration. Many perfume blends will have 20% or less of this note. Ginger lily CO absolute and sandalwood essential oil are your base notes.

You can use the fragrance wheel to invent your own signature fragrance that best suits your sense of smell and taste.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Sunflower seed oil: This oil is going to be used as a perfume oil base. This carrier oil has a bland odor which makes it a good candidate for your perfume blending. You can use olive oil instead since it lacks a very strong aroma.

  • Sandalwood essential oil: It has an earthy, woody and spicy scent all packed in one essential oil. It is less volatile and long-lasting in the perfume oil. If you use Australian sandalwood then expect fresh undertones to it. Each sandalwood specie will slightly differ with the other. Its one of the base notes.
