This is another flavor in the series, a sweet, citrus fruity scent that is not very subtle or too overwhelming to your senses. Fruit scents are well-balanced and can be used by anybody.

When making perfume balm you should know about perfume pyramid notes, they are divided into three layers. Top notes, middle notes and base notes. What we mean by notes is actually an individual scent, absolutes, essential oils or fragrance oils based on their evaporation rate after applying them on your skin. How long do they stay on your skin? Are they short-lived or long-lasting?

In this recipe we gonna simply use essential oils and absolutes to make your perfume balms. Avoid using fragrance oils, these are artificial scents made in lab and not naturally derived like essential oils. Buy organic essential oils from certified companies.

The Basics of Perfume Blending

Top notes: They make up between 5 to 20% of the perfume. It is usually short-lived and dissipate within 5 to 20 minutes of application on the skin. In this recipe making your top note is going to be tangerine essential oil and litsea cubeba essential oil, both of which are of citrusy scent.

Middle notes: They are also known heart motes. They make a big percent of the perfume blend from 60 to 80%. These notes act link as a top notes and base notes. These notes can last up to an hour. Your perfume balm will contain black currant bud absolute and roman chamomile essential oil.

Base notes: They make 5 to 20% of the perfume blend. These are usually very overwhelming to the senses and thick absolutes or essential oils. They can last for 6 to 8 hours. This perfume balm would not be made with these two, vanilla absolute and benzoin resin oil.

In the art of perfume blending, there is no a right and wrong scent, with trial and error and practice you can create scent that you'll come to appreciate and love. Use your natural talents to smell various scents till you recognize the ones that are best for you. You can use a fragrance wheel to find what complements you.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Fractionated coconut oil: It is also called coconut MCT oil. It is a good perfume diluent because of its neutral odor and stability more than the unrefined coconut oil with stronger aroma and less prone to go rancid as your perfume blend matures overtime. It will be good as part of your perfume balm.

  • Black currant bud absolute: Has a rich fruity scent that can differ ranging from green to red currants. Its going to act as middle note in this perfume balm.

  • Litsea cubeba essential oil: It falls in the citrus category of scents though is more than just that. It has a sweet crisp citrusy and fresh aroma that fits well as a top note. It better than other citruses like sweet orange, grapefruit or lemon notes for your perfume balm.

  • Jojoba oil: It is has a bland odor making it a good option to use when blending essential oils. A perfume blend should not be more than 10% in your chosen carrier. in this matter, its fractionated coconut oil we are using. Other carrier oil with bland odor is olive oil, you can use that.

  • Beeswax: Beeswax is what makes the solid perfume balm. Grate your beeswax for easy use. If you're a vegan don't worry, we got you covered! Just replace beeswax for candelilla wax or soy wax flakes in your recipe. Candelilla wax is also praised for reducing signs of aging, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks.
