It is always a good idea to have a skincare product that addresses issues of different body parts, which often than not the skincare industry decided to make different products that are used for different body parts. For instance you can get a hair lotion here, a face lotion there and a foot lotion under. What if you make your own lotion to address your hands and overall body lotions. Your DIY hand and body lotion is going to be scented with citrus scent of bergamot essential oil. Your secret ingredient and signature fragrance combo!

Selecting Ingredients

  • Peach kernel oil: It is good carrier oil for making this hand and body lotion with its peachy aroma. It is good for soothing inflamed, irritated and sensitive skin with comedogenic scale of 2 which means it is unlikely to clog skin pores.

  • Rosehip seed oil: This oil has a very strong aroma with richer amber color. It has high content of vitamin A and E oil. It is good for dry, mature, sensitive and normal skin. It can help to rejuvenate and reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines on the skin. Therefore this oil is such a good choice for making this hand and body lotion.

  • Vegetable glycerin: It makes for a very good humectant meaning that it can moisturize and hydrate the skin barrier and that's what you're looking for when making this recipe. It is also vegan-friendly and hypoallergenic skincare ingredient widely used in formulating DIY skincare products.

  • Stearic acid: A long-chain saturated fatty acid that can be derived from the animal or vegetable fats used in skincare formulations. It is non-comedogenic which means it does not clog pores or cause breakouts. If you prefer a vegan-friendly recipe then use stearic acid made from vegetable fats.

  • Emulsifying wax: A good one is plant-based emulsifying wax. The function of emulsifying wax is to combine oil phase ingredients with water phase ingredients. Normally, emulsifying wax has no odor and is white powder. Without this ingredient then you can't get lotion emulsion.

  • Bergamot hydrosol: This hydrosol will help to fortify the bergamot essential oil scent. Make sure your hydrosol is sterile to avoid it causing bacterial growth in the end product that is your hand and body lotion. But also avoid avoid exposing your hydrosol to air and dirty hands or surfaces in order to preserve its purity.

  • Vitamin E oil: Contains anti-oxidant tocopherol which improve skin elasticity and help boost collagen production. In this recipe, it can act as very good preservative for our bergamot hand and body lotion.

  • Bergamot essential oil: It is known for its citrus fragrance. It has skin detoxifying, purifying and cleansing properties. It is your secret ingredient that will make your hand and body lotion that fragrant and memorable for every application in your skincare routine.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ two and a half teaspoons of peach kernel oil

  • 2 ½ two and a half teaspoons of rosehip seed oil

  • ½ teaspoon of vegetable glycerin

  • ½ teaspoon of stearic acid

  • 2 heaping teaspoons of emulsifying wax

  • ⅓ cup of bergamot hydrosol

  • 25 drops of bergamot essential oil

  • ¼ teaspoon of Vitamin E oil

Prepare your utensils like measuring spoons, mixing bowl, hand-held mixer, kitchen thermometer, a wooden spoon, measuring cups and a saucepan.

Instructions

  1. Gather your ingredients: peach kernel oil, rosehip seed oil, vegetable glycerin, stearic acid and emulsifying wax first and place them on a kitchen top.

  2. Measure out your ingredients and then into a glass measuring cup and sit this in a saucepan containing a few inches of simmering water. This is going to act as your hot water bath. Alternatively, use a double boiler for your convenience.

  3. Stir the mixture in frequent intervals till all your ingredients are completely melted. Test the temperature by using kitchen thermometer, check if it reaches between 160-180 Fahrenheit.

  4. Meanwhile measure out your bergamot hydrosol in another glass measuring cup and place it in a saucepan of simmering water and then heat it to temperature of 160-180 Fahrenheit.

  5. Now take out your first measuring cup from the simmering water or double boiler, the measuring cup that you had put oil-phase ingredients in, the 2 and 3 step.

  6. Then, pour the oil-phase ingredients into the glass mixing bowl and mix it with your hand-held mixer till creamy. Make sure there are no air bubbles in your mixture.

  7. You can now take out the measuring cup of bergamot hydrosol from the simmering water, it should be ready at this moment and pour it into the mixture in the mixing bowl, continue blending for more 5 minutes. Make sure there all these ingredients are completely well-combined.

  8. Wait the mixture to cool to 95 to 105 Fahrenheit. At this stage you can add vitamin E oil and bergamot essential oil to the mixture.

  9. Pour your mixture in a well sanitized container and store it in a cool and dry place.
