Sometimes when looking across the aisle in a mall, it can be hard to find well-formulated exfoliators for dark skin. Many chemical exfoliators contain high percentages of AHAs such as glycolic acid that may be too harsh for dark skin and BHAs may be hard to get in some places. You can use physical exfoliators like sugars or salts to remove dead skin cells. When it comes to skincare, exfoliation is part and parcel of the skincare pyramid.

There are many benefits to skin exfoliation that can boost overall skin health and radiance. The following are benefits of skin exfoliation are

  • Boost collagen production

  • Improve skin elasticity

  • Reduce acne breakouts

  • Improves skin texture

  • Lightens the skin tone

  • Boosts circulation flow

  • Encourages absorption of skincare products

You can embrace natural skincare with easy DIY recipes that can help remove dead skin cells and leave it smooth, even and radiant complexion. You can use ingredients that you can find in your kitchen already to make body scrubs. This body scrub is going to have mashed sweet bananas and yoghurt. This recipe is good for your skin and health too! You can eat it as a snack.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Brown sugar/Light brown sugar: You can use brown or light brown sugar as your main ingredient in this case. Sugars are not only sweet but are more gentler than salts even for delicate or sensitive skin. Choose fine grade sugar for your body scrub. Sugar act as an exfoliant due to its abrasive properties.

  • Ground oatmeal: It is a good physical exfoliant which can sloughs off dead skin cells, dirt and oils. It can reduce irritation, redness, inflammation, moisturize your skin after exfoliation. Ground oatmeal has nutrients that can benefit the skin overall.

  • Mashed sweet banana: Who doesn't like sweet banana? It is a yellow fruit that grows in tropical countries on a tree. Bananas are fairly cheap and can be easily found in local markets anywhere in the world. For one body scrub use you'll need not more than two ripe bananas. You can just mash up your bananas with a back side of a spoon or a masher.

  • Honey: Honey is a good humectant that can hydrate and moisturize the skin. It can prevent breakout of acne and fade acne scars. You have to know that honey has anti-aging properties that can maintain youthful skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe and calm your skin even for sunburn issues.

  • Plain yoghurt: It can be a favorite snack, but guess what else can you do with it? Use it for your skincare routine. Yoghurt contains lactic acid that can lighten and even out your skin tone. I prefer Greek yoghurt, don't use flavored yoghurt as it contains additives such as flavorings and colorings we do not intend to have in our body scrub.

  • Any essential oil(optional): You can add any essential oil of your choice. Essential oils can be very beneficial for your skin. If you don't have one, don't worry, the body scrub will still work! Add 15 to 25 drops of your favorite essential oil, it'll be enough.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of brown sugar or light brown sugar

  • 1/2 (half) cup of ground oatmeal

  • 2/3 (two-thirds) cup of mashed sweet ripe banana

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

  • 1 tablespoon of yoghurt

These recipe is very easy to make and I believe you'll be able to outsource ingredients from your kitchen, local store or local market at a fairly cheap price, perfect for skincare on budget vibes!
