If you prefer a "no-poo" hair wash day, then you've come to the right place! Gals!, let's talk about Herbal rinses. If you want your hair to be clean without harsh chemicals like parabens, sulfates, silicones, artificial dyes and artificial fragrances then herbal rinses are what to look for!. Herbal rinses can clean and clarify your beautiful locks without causing damage to hair cuticles. Unlike conventional shampoos, herbal rinses do not lather or form form.

Herbal rinses do not leave toxic residue after wash. They can clarify your hair and scalp, ridding the hair from dirt, greasy oils, dandruff and excess build-up. Herbal rinses can help balance hair natural pH. They can also make a good option if you have highlighted or colored hair because they are very gentle. You can use them in several times a week without overthinking.

SELECTING INGREDIENTS

  • Water: In this recipe, distilled water is not a must. Just clean and safe water from the tap will do the trick. You will boil it together with witch hazel hydrosol for maximum benefits. Just know that this herbal rinse will not be able to stay for long before going stale. It is for one or two time use only.

  • Witch hazel hydrosol: If you want to reap more benefits having a hydrosol or floral water can boost your hair rinse. Witch hazel hydrosol can act as an astringent for oily scalp. It is filled with anti-oxidants that can promote both hair and scalp health.

  • Lemon peel: Lemon contains citric acid which can be a good option for creating a hair rinse to prevent pre-mature aging, combat scalp and hair oiliness. Just use a zester/shredder to get fine lemon zest. Additionally, lemon has a nice citrus scent that linger after rinsing out your hair.

  • Ginger: Ginger has anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which can help to not only cleanse but also sooth the scalp. Grate your ginger so that it will be easy to measure them with a tablespoon. Together with other ingredients, ginger can work to boost hair health.

  • Dried rosemary herb: Rosemary has many benefits with studies to back it up. Including rosemary in your haircare recipe will add more benefits to your hair rinse.

  • Apple cider vinegar: Another ingredient that I find very beneficial to use. Helps to close open hair cuticles but also balances hair and scalp pH. This can may your hair less prone to breakage.

  • Lavender essential oil: It is very soothing for the scalp and hair. It has a sweet-smelling scent that you'll like in your hair after rinsing. Its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties can help prevent scalp infections. Lavender scent will balance out the citrus smell of lemon.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of boiling water

  • 1 cup of witch hazel hydrosol

  • 1 tablespoon of freshly zest of lemon peel

  • 1 tablespoon of grated ginger

  • 1 tablespoon of dried rosemary

  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

  • 10 drops of lavender essential oil

Gather your tools and supplies; a saucepan, tablespoons, a kitchen thermometer, cheese cloth or sieve, a designated spray bottle and a cooker. When making your herbal hair rinse remember to gather your ingredients and tools to avoid any kind of inconvenience. This DIY haircare recipe is simple to make and has less downtime. All ingredients can be easily outsourced in your own kitchen and even better if your have your own garden🍃!

Instructions

  1. First, take your two cups, one cup of water and another cup of witch hazel hydrosol, pour them in a saucepan. Place the saucepan on the cooker or stove top and bring it to boiling.

  2. Next, without letting the mixture to cool, add your herbal rinse, freshly zest of lemon peel, grated ginger and dried rosemary. This herbs act as astringent which can help oily scalp be less oily. Add apple cider vinegar to the mix.

  3. Close tightly with the lid and leave the herbs to infuse in the water. Wait for your mixture to cool to room temperature (77 Fahrenheit).

  4. Use a cheese cloth or a sieve to strain liquid from the herbs.

  5. At this stage, you can add your favorite essential oil. In this case, I'm using lavender essential oil.

  6. Pour your herbal hair rinse in your designated spray bottle.

HOW TO USE YOUR HERBAL HAIR RINSE

  • First cleanse your hair with homemade shampoo.

  • Then spray your herbal hair rinse all over your hair and massage thoroughly.

  • Leave your herbal hair rinse to take its effect for five minutes.

  • Rinse out your hair and towel dry it.

  • Apply leave-in conditioner and hair oil and style your hair the way you'd like.
