This recipe has gather one of the best ingredients for hair growth that can help your hair follicles to be stimulated and increase the hair growth and a good routine for hair length retention.
LEARN ABOUT YOUR HAIR CYCLE
Our hair grows up to six inches per year, though due to factors such as haircare routine, weather and even genetics. Our hair go through four stages; anagen, catagen, telogen and exogen. Anagen is the growth phase for hair, at any given time 85 to 90 percent our hair is at this phase. Next is catagen phase is characterized by slowing down of hair growth and cutting blood supply to the hair strand. Telogen phase follows suit where the hair is at its resting stage, our hair strands that are in this stage are 10 to 15 percent at any given time. Lastly the hair sheds at exogen phase, the hair falls of the hair follicle allowing for new strand to grow. It should be noted that shedding not more than 150 hair strands as part of the hair cycle and something to worry about.
With this kind of haircare DIY recipe our main goal is to elongate the anagen and catagen phase so that hair strands get ample time to grow. But also reduce hair breakage hair shedding in order to see hair retention
SELECTING INGREDIENTS
Argan oil: It derived from kernels of argan tree. A native plant to Algeria and Morocco, it can nourish your hair and protect your hair from damage by coating hair strands.
Castor oil: Castor oil can help with hair growth when applied to hair scalp. It is filled with anti-oxidants that can stimulate hair growth. Get organic one it will be good for this recipe. Feel free to use Jamaican or Haitian castor oil for more benefits.
Emulsifying wax: As you already know leave-in conditioners are emulsion, a mixture of water and oil, so emulsifying wax help for water based and oil-based ingredients to bind together. In our recipe we are going to use it add it with oil-based ingredients.
Stearic acid: White flakes that are derived from vegetable fats. They are good at making an emulsion but also nourishing and moisturizing hair, keeping your hair hydrated can reduce chances of breakage.
Liquid lecithin: A brown liquid derived from soybeans is used to bind together water-based ingredients with oil-based ingredients. It plays role in creating the emulsion.
Witch hazel hydrosol: Rich in a flavonoids and anti-oxidants, witch hazel hydrosol can help moisturize the hair which can keep your hair looking good while retaining its length.
Xanthan gum powder: A thickening agent, xanthan gum powder is derived from a bacteria. You can substitute this option for guar gum. Mix this ingredient in water-based ingredients.
Nettle essential oil: Also called stinging nettle, not only can it make your hair stronger from the roots but also make it shiny and lustrous. So, its a great option to help retain hair length.
Saw palmetto essential oil: The ultimate solution to hair fall! Saw palmetto is very strong essential oil with ability to reduce hair fall, hair loss, stimulate hair follicles for maximum hair growth and make your hair stronger.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons of argan oil
2 tablespoons of castor oil
3 teaspoons of emulsifying wax
ยฝ teaspoon of stearic acid
ยฝ teaspoon of liquid lecithin
1 cup of witch hazel hydrosol
โ teaspoon of xanthan gum powder
20 drops of nettle essential oil
5 drops of saw palmetto essential oil
Get your tools and supplies such as kitchen thermometer, measuring spoons, glass measuring cups, glass mixing bowl, saucepan, wooden spoon/mixing spoon and hand-held mixer. Get ready to make this haircare DIY recipe.
Instructions
In a glass measuring cup, combine the argan oil, castor oil, emulsifying wax, stearic acid and liquid lecithin.
Next, submerge the measuring cup in a saucepan containing a few inches of simmering water.
Now get another clean glass measuring cup and add witch hazel hydrosol and xanthan gum powder. Submerge the glass measuring cup in another saucepan of simmering water.
Heat both glass measuring cups to the temperature between 160 to 180 Fahrenheit, not more than that or else your ingredients will start to denature and lose their potency. Once your oil-wax mixture is melted remove it from the saucepan. Do the same to the witch hazel hydrosol and xanthan gum powder measuring cup.
Pour the oil-wax mixture into glass mixing bowl and begin mixing with a hand-held mixer in a low speed and gradually increase the speed to medium for 2 to 3 minutes.
Add the witch hazel hydrosol and xanthan gum powder mixture into the glass mixing bowl and continue mixing for more five minutes and wait it to cool to 100 Fahrenheit.
At this stage you can add your essential oils, saw palmetto essential oil and nettle essential oil drop by drop and continue to mix till all essential oils are well-blend in.
At last you can take your mixture from the bowl and pour it into your designated bottle of your choice.
Store your DIY haircare leave-in conditioner in a refrigerator and use within two weeks.
HOW TO USE YOUR SAW PALMETTO AND NETTLE LEAVE-IN HAIR CONDITIONER
After shampooing and conditioning your hair, dry it with microfiber towel.
Apply your leave-in hair conditioner to damp towel-dried hair and comb through.
Lock in moisture with your favorite hair oil or butter.
Style your hair the way you please.
TIPS AND TRICKS TO HAIR LENGTH RETENTION
Wash your hair with non-chlorinated water. Chlorinated water can damage hair strands after using it routinely to wash your hair. Get a water filter and fit it into your shower head so that the water you use is chlorine-free.
Nourish your hair with plant oils such as castor oil, argan oil, avocado oil, hempseed oil and pumpkinseed oil, plant extracts and essential oils. This protect your hair from damage thus hair length retention.
Avoid wearing your hair in tight ponytails and using rubber bands to tie your hair.
Avoid using hot hair styling tools excessively which can damage hair strands and make them thinner in such that they break easily.
Trim your hair ends to avoid split ends every 3 to 4 months, a quarter an inch will be just enough, don't over-trim since you won't be able to see any length retention.
