Lotion Bars for Sunburn Relief

This recipe is about making lotion bars for sunburn relief. In somedays you might spend more time in the sun especially during the summer. This can affect your skin and cause sunburn and redness for individuals of type I and II though even people of type V and VI and in between should never ignore their skin and prevent their skin from getting sun damage. If you don't protect your skin from the sun then this is going to happen

  • Photo-aging; aging of the skin due to consistent sun exposure over the years

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Appearance of moles

  • Sunburn

  • Skin redness

  • Skin dryness

  • Appearance of wrinkles and fine lines

  • Lesions

  • High chances of getting skin cancer

Apart from using this lotion bar recipe, wear sunglasses, wear clothes that cover your body, stay in the shade and wear sunscreen SPF 50+ when outdoors. This is the ultimate stage in daily skincare to maintain overall skin health.

Your recipe is going to contain one of the best skincare ingredients around, and those are red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil and illipe butter. These ingredients can work synergistically to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB sunrays. Enjoy making this recipe but enjoy even more using this recipe. Without further ado let's jump in, shall we?

Selecting Ingredients

  • Candelilla wax: It is a type of vegetable wax that is derived from candlewood shrub. This type of wax is good for lotion bar crafting and even other DIY skincare products. If you like natural and vegan-friendly recipes then this is a quite a good choice since for some soy wax can be yuck, any wax of your choice will do.

  • Cocoa butter: It is yellowish hard butter at a room temperature. It has a sweet chocolate scent that lingers after being applied on your skin. It is part of making any lotion bar recipe. Cocoa butter can make your lotion bars to be sticky if they take a large share of butter to be used in lotion bar formulation.

  • Shea butter: It is pale yellow, soft, creamy butter. It has a sweet-scented nutty aroma. Shea butter increases skin elasticity and help to repair the skin. When shea butter and illipe butter are combined, they can act as a very powerful formulation to help with sunburn relief.

  • Red raspberry seed oil: Find organic cold-pressed version for better result. This is the sole ingredient which can protect the skin from photo-aging and sunburn. Some studies show that red raspberry oil can have sun protection factor (SPF) 28 to 50 SPF for UVA rays and around 8 SPF for UVB rays. It is filled with anti-oxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Essential oils: It is optional to use them in this recipe. In this recipe, we're going to use essential oil blend, lavender essential oil and carrot seed essential oil. Lavender essential oil calms and soothes the skin while carrot seed essential oil contains vitamin A that can help repair the skin. You can use another blend too of your choice but it should not exceed 120 drops, combined.

  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa butter

  • 2 tablespoons of illipe butter

  • 2 tablespoons of shea butter

  • 5 tablespoons of red raspberry seed oil

  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil(optional)

  • 25 drops of carrot seed essential oil(optional)

When it comes to molds, there is a plethora of options that can be used if you don't have silicone molds at hand. You can use finished yoghurt tubs, shaped glass containers or ice cube trays. Just make sure your molds are clean and well-sanitized to avoid impurities in our end product.

QUICK TIP: Spray oil on your molds especially for non-silicone ones before pouring the hot mixture to avoid getting sticky when popping them out or worse enough break a lotion bar in the process.

Instructions

First things first, collect all your ingredients and tools that you will need in the recipe making process such as saucepot, measuring spoons, wooden spoon, mixing bowl, kitchen thermometer, molds and so on. Let's BEGIN, shall we?!

  1. Begin by adding candelilla wax and cocoa butter to a heatproof glass measuring cup and place it in simmering water bath until the ingredients are melted. If you have a double boiler, it's worth it! Go ahead with it, it'll save you lots of stress whenever you're crafting lotion bars.

  2. Next, add shea butter, illipe butter and red raspberry seed oil and let these ingredients melt completely in the measuring cup.

  3. Once completely melted, remove from heat and turn off the stove top.

  4. Then add your essential oil blend while stirring occasionally. This step is optional, you can just skip it if you don't have essential oils.

  5. Carefully pour your hot mixture to your silicone molds or any other designated molds of your choice and leave it to cool to room temperature. Let your lotion bars harden solid.

QUICK TIP: Once cooled you can put your lotion bars in a refrigerator for them to harden solid and make it easier for them to pop out of the molds without damaging them especially if your mold has delicate or intricate design that requires care when removing them from the molds.

  6. Remove your lotion bars from the molds and store them in a cool dry place.

How To Use Your Lotion Bars

Simply replace your conventional liquid lotions with your solid lotion bars. They make a good alternative if you want to embrace natural skincare but sun protection has always been one of those drawbacks because it is hard to find natural ingredients with high sun protection factor. This lotion bar recipe is also gentle to sensitive skin type, other skin types can make use of it for well-nourished skin.

Final Thoughts

I hope you liked this recipe and it has been very helpful for you in general. The lotion bars gonna soothe and calm inflamed or sunburned skin made from all natural ingredients but also vegan friendly. These lotion bars should not exceed 12 months after making and should be well stored for maintaining their efficacy. Check other skincare and haircare recipes posts.
