If you have curly, frizzy and kinky hair having hair balm that can smoothen out those edges and keep flyaways and 'baby hair' in place is such a life saver. Making your own hair balm is also rewarding.

Many conventional edge control products such as balms and gels contain harmful ingredients like silicones, sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oil, alcohol and carbomer gels can make your hair dry and brittle after using them over a long period of time day after day. Worse enough including tight braiding and twisting, hair weaving and wearing of lace wigs/hair extensions can weaken your hairline leading to traction alopecia.

Traction alopecia is a worst thing anyone can experience especially for women because in many cultures a woman having hair, long hair is considered a trait of beauty. Having a receding hairline can spell disaster! Even if you manage to hide it under a headdress or wig still your self-esteem and self-confidence can be affected tremendously.

Having a good hair balm for edge control that can hydrate, moisturize and slick down your edges without worrying about them getting weigh down or super-dry that they break can be good news. Come with me and make a natural hair balm now let's keep those flyaways in place!

SELECTING INGREDIENTS

  • Carnauba wax: It is yellowish in color wax derived from a Brazilian palm tree. This wax in its purest form smells like crayons. It contains emollients that can nourish your hair. Carnauba wax when applied on hair forms a protective barrier which prevents water and other products underneath such as leave-in conditioner to not evaporate due to daily heat.

  • Shea butter: Shea butter is not only good at moisturizing skin but also hair. It can condition, soften and smoothen out hair as this is one of the things that we need in our hair balm. Dry, brittle and damaged hair will benefit the most from shea butter ability to moisturize and hydrating hair.

  • Argan oil: Get Moroccan argan oil for best results. It is one of those loved ingredients in haircare products and for the right reasons. Argan oil can simply increase luster and shine to dull hair so is your edges and 'baby hair'!. Argan oil can improve hair elasticity thus reduce chances of hair breakage. If this is one of your hair goals to have less breakage of edges and hairline adding argan oil in your hair balm can be the best thing you will do for your hair.

  • Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is filled with omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin E all this nutrients can boost and nourish your edges. Jojoba oil can have numerous benefits that can improve hair manageability. If you want your hair edges to grow out then include this carrier oil in this recipe for good happy hair day!

  • Wheatgerm oil: It has high content of vitamin E that can be very beneficial for your edges and hair. Wheatgerm oil can revitalize, repair hair damage from heat and chemical treatments and help grow out edges. But also wheatgerm oil can improve the scalp health.

  • Vitamin E oil: This ingredient can act as a natural preservative for your hair balm to have a longer shelf-life. But also vitamin E oil is good anti-oxidant at fighting free radicals especially the ones caused by UV sunrays exposure or pollution and fall on your hair.

  • Grapefruit essential oil: It has a very remarkable citrus scent that you can remember and have memories of, every time you apply it on 'em edges and 'baby hair'. This grapefruit scent is amazing! No doubt I chose it for this recipe.

  • Lavender essential oil: This is one of best essential oils for hair growth. Adding this essential oil will make sure your hair balm does not only address flyaways or just make edges slick but also get those 'baby hair' to full grown adult strands. Lavender essential oil can tremendously help your hair to grow.

Instructions

  1. Collect all your ingredients on the kitchen top, I hope that's where you'll be making this recipe. Gather your carnauba wax flakes, shea butter, argan oil, jojoba oil, wheatgerm oil, vitamin E oil, grapefruit essential oil and lavender essential oil.

  3. Now place your glass measuring cup in a saucepan of simmering water on a stove top.

  4. Your stove top should be on low heat. Wait till all the wax and butter has completely melted. When it reaches at temperature around 160 Fahrenheit is usually the sweet spot.

  5. Then you can remove your melted mixture from the heat.

  6. Add drop by drop using a dropper ( many essential oil bottles come with one) , vitamin E oil, grapefruit essential oil and lavender essential oil. Stir well till the mixture has a uniform blend.

  7. Pour your mixture into well-sanitized small metal containers or glass container and cover with a lid.

  8. Store in a cool dry place.

HOW TO USE YOUR HAIR BALM

  • After your haircare routine that means shampooing and conditioning you can proceed to do LCO or LOC method, (C for hair Cream, L for leave-in conditioner and O for hair Oil) for your clean hair depending on your hair porosity.

  • Massage a small amount of your hair balm in the palms of your hands and gently apply to dry hair.

  • Use a small hair brush (the one that looks like a toothbrush) to smoothen out your edges and 'baby hair' and make sure every strand is in place.
