Dark armpits can be a source of discomfort and embarrassment for many individuals. Several factors contribute to the darkening of the skin in the underarm area, each requiring different considerations for prevention and treatment.

What Causes Dark Armpits?

There are many things that can cause you to get dark armpits. Today, I'm going to address few of them down below:

  • Frequent shaving: Shaving can irritate the skin, especially if you have sensitive skin, leading to inflammation and subsequent darkening. But also the use of harsh chemical hair removal creams can exacerbate this issue. These products often contain strong ingredients that may cause skin irritation, resulting in a darker appearance over time. It is better to do sugar waxing for sensitive skin and regular waxing for other skin types can work too. If you are fair skinned you could consider laser removal though this won't be a good choice for darker skin individuals.

  • Hyperpigmentation is another significant factor that leads to dark armpits. This skin condition involves the excessive production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is particularly relevant; it occurs when the skin heals from an injury or irritation, leaving behind discolored patches. Darker skinned individuals are more susceptible to this skin condition.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another condition that can indirectly contribute to darkening of the underarms. This hormonal disorder often results in increased levels of hormones especially among women, which can lead to skin changes, including hyperpigmentation in various areas of the body, including the underarms.

  • The regular use of deodorants containing aluminum or zirconium compounds may also play a role. While these ingredients help reduce sweat and odor, they can sometimes lead to skin irritation and contribute to darkening.

  • Lastly, wearing tight clothing in the underarm area can lead to friction, trapping moisture and creating an environment conducive to darkening and bacterial growth. This friction, combined with sweat, can irritate the skin and potentially lead to discoloration.

Understanding these common causes is key to effectively addressing dark armpits and developing a suitable remedy and ways to avoid getting dark armpits in the first place.

Remedies to Lighten Dark Armpits

I got some few natural homemade remedies that you can use for lightening the dark armpits. Several natural ingredients have properties that work well for skin lightening, and incorporating them into a routine can yield remarkable results. So, here are some effective DIY exfoliants for lightening dark armpits.

LEMON AND SUGAR SCRUB

Lemon, known for its natural bleaching properties, is an excellent choice. The granular sugar helps to exfoliate dead skin cells while the citric acid in lemon lightens the skin tone.

Ingredients

  • One lemon

  • Half a Cup Sugar(granular white or brown)

STEPS

  1. To create an effective remedy, press lemon juice and then mix lemon juice with a sugar to form a scrub.

  2. Apply this mixture to the armpits, gently massaging it in circular motions for about 5-10 minutes.

  3. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. This treatment can be performed two to three times a week for optimal outcomes. Just make a quick mixture before going to take a bath, and use it in there while you have a bath.

LEMON AND HONEY

Another beneficial ingredient is honey, a natural humectant that can provide hydration while also working to lighten the skin. It has antibacterial properties, which help keep the skin healthy.

Ingredients

  • One small lemon

  • 2 teaspoons of natural honey

STEPS

  1. To use honey, combine it with a bit of lemon juice for added potency.

  2. Apply the mixture to the armpits and leave it on for approximately 20 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. This remedy can be repeated once every few days.

ALOE VERA GEL

Aloe vera is also highly effective, renowned for its soothing and healing properties. It contains enzymes that promote skin regeneration, helping to lighten dark spots. You can buy Aloe Vera gel online or fresh from the plant.

Ingredients

  • Aloe Vera Gel

STEPS

  1. Simply apply fresh aloe vera gel to the affected area before bedtime and leave it overnight.

  2. Rinse off in the morning. This can be done daily for the best results.

SUGAR AND COCONUT OIL SCRUB

Lastly, sugar serves as a natural exfoliant; its granular texture gently sloughs away dead skin cells while promoting new growth. Coconut oil has antibacterial properties that can help fight off bad bacteria that grow on sweaty armpits.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil

  • 2 teaspoon of granular sugar(white or brown)

STEPS

  1. Mix together coconut oil and sugar to form a granular mixture.

  2. A scrub made from sugar and coconut oil can be particularly nourishing.

  3. Use it once a week to maintain soft, glowing skin under the arms.

Incorporating these natural remedies into your routine can facilitate significant improvements in the appearance of dark armpits. With consistent application and proper care, lightening dark armpits naturally is achievable.

How To Keep Your Armpits Bright

Maintaining the brightness of your armpits is an essential aspect of personal hygiene and overall skin health. One effective strategy is to be mindful of the products you apply.

Avoid using in-store deodorants and antiperspirant: Many conventional deodorants contain ingredients such as alcohol, aluminum or zirconium, which can lead to skin irritation and contribute to darkening over time. It is advisable to choose deodorants that are free from such compounds and instead opt for natural alternatives. I have linked a blog post on how to make natural deodorant below.

Wear breathable and loose-fitting clothes can greatly reduce friction and irritation in the underarm area. Tight clothing can trap heat and moisture, fostering an environment conducive to sweating and bacterial growth, which may ultimately lead to darkening of the skin. Prefer using fabrics such as cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking materials are excellent choices that promote airflow and help keep the underarm area dry.

Use of regular exfoliation: Using a gentle scrub or a homemade mixture of sugar and lemon juice can help remove dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of darkness. Incorporating this practice into your skincare routine can keep your underarms looking fresh and vibrant.

Stay hydrated: Drinking a lot of water can support skin health from the inside out, further aiding in preventing pigmentation issues.

Bottom Line

Ultimately, addressing dark armpits effectively often requires a tailored approach, particularly when home remedies fail. Engaging with a dermatologist can ensure a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan, promoting healthier skin and confidence in one’s appearance.
